Finding Stability After Family Breakdown
After a sudden family breakdown, a parent with young children found themselves struggling to keep up with household bills. Debt began to build, and the pressure became overwhelming. Unsure where to turn, they visited the foodbank several times for support.
To help them access longer‑term solutions, our team encouraged them to meet with South Bristol Advice Services. With specialist guidance and continued support from us, they finally felt a sense of relief during an incredibly difficult period.
This combination of practical help and expert advice gave them the stability they needed to move forward.

Coping With Illness and Caring for a Family
A single parent of a large family faced immense pressure after receiving two serious health diagnoses in quick succession. Strict budgeting became impossible with the extra costs of hospital visits, and they relied on the foodbank for several weeks while undergoing treatment.
As their health improved, support was gradually reduced to monthly visits. When they later received positive news about their recovery, their relief was clear. With renewed confidence, they were able to manage their household finances independently once again.
Today, the family is thriving — a testament to the power of timely support and compassionate community care.

No One Should Have To Choose Between Heat and Their Companion
A young adult, recently out of care and living alone in a caravan, arrived at the foodbank during a harsh winter feeling cold, distressed, and isolated. In desperate circumstances, she had pawned her dog for food. Yet her dog was her only companion and source of warmth — feeding her pet was cheaper than running any heating.
Our team helped her recover her dog and provided easy‑to‑prepare food to support her through this difficult period. With consistent care and understanding, she regained stability and moved forward with renewed hope.
Since then, we have ensured that pet food is available, so no one faces such a heart-breaking choice again.

A Bicycle That Changed Everything
A client arrived at a foodbank session excited to start a new job, expecting to need support only until their first wage. The following week, however, they became anxious about the cost and logistics of commuting — public transport was unaffordable, and walking wasn’t possible.
One of our volunteers suggested cycling. After a community appeal, the client was offered a choice of six donated bicycles. With this practical support, they were able to accept the job and move forward with confidence.
