Volunteer Stories
The Heart of Our Work
Our volunteers bring kindness, stability, and hope into people’s lives every single week.
They are the first friendly face someone sees on a difficult day, the listening ear when things feel overwhelming, and the steady presence that helps people feel safe and supported.
These stories offer a glimpse into what volunteering means — the challenges, the joy, the shared humanity, and the moments that stay with you.

Debbie's Story
“There may be some tears, but seeing someone start a new job, receive a gift for a birthday or new baby, or realise they’re in a better position to cope brings a shared joy in good news and makes volunteering truly worthwhile. And the friendships formed with other volunteers are a delight.”
Debbie’s experience reflects what many of our volunteers say:

Jenny's Story
As Jenny approached a significant birthday, she thought it might be time to step back. As part of our morning team, she helps sort donations and check dates before food goes to those who need it.
Like many volunteers, Jenny wondered whether the early starts would become less appealing as the darker, colder mornings arrived. But after reflecting on how much she enjoys being part of the team, she decided she wasn't ready to give it up just yet.
"I really enjoy being part of the foodbank team and, for the time being, I certainly feel like sticking with it. I would miss it very much if I stopped. As long as I keep the energy levels I have at the moment, I hope to continue. I think all the summer daylight has done me good!"
Jenny's story is a wonderful reminder that volunteering brings benefits not only to those receiving support, but also to the volunteers themselves. The friendships, sense of purpose, and shared commitment to helping others keep people coming back.
We are delighted Jenny has decided to stay with us and continue making a difference in our community. Thank you, Jenny!
